Tools of the Trade -  Edge Tools and their Makers

“John Martin according to the 1850 Census of Manufacturers was an edge tool maker in Greensboro Township, Henry County. He had invested $200 in his business. In a year he used 1200 pounds of iron and steel at a cost of $150 and 800 bushel [sic] of coal at $32. The shop used only hand power and employed 2 men paid $15 a month apiece. They produced 300 axes worth $600. He was still in business in 1862.”
